On June 17, in an unprecedented event for European basketball, 31,004 people gathered in the seven cities which will host EuroBasket 2009 in order to beat the Guiness World Record in dribbling a basketball simultaneously in different places. The event was staged by the Polish Basketball Federation and the Local Organising Committees of EuroBasket 2009 and was broadcast live by the public broadcaster TVP. There weren't too many tears shed for Italy when they blew a double-digit lead in the second half and lost to Greece in their crunch fifth-place battle at the EuroBasket Women on June 20.

How could any neutral not smile at the sight of the Greeks doing a dance on the court after that 60-56 victory that catapulted Evina Maltsi and Co into the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women and the EuroBasket Women 2011 in Poland?

Berlin, Germany played host to the draw for the newly named EuroChallenge on Tuesday as the names of the teams participating in Qualifying Round 1 were drawn and the potential match-ups for Qualifying Round 2 were also set.

The teams will play home and away games to determine who will advance to Qualifying Round 2 with the team drawn first hosting the opening game. Eight teams will eventually advance out of the two qualifying rounds to take part in the EuroChallenge Regular Season.

The remainder of the 32 teams competing in EuroChallenge Regular Season will come from a group of eight teams who directly advanced and the 16 losing teams from the EuroCup (formely the ULEB Cup) Qualifying Round.

EuroChallenge will kick off on 14 October and seven days later on 21 October the return legs will be played to decide who will advance to Qualifying Round 2.
