FIBA Europe announced on Wednesday that Gintare Petronyte of Lithuania has been named the 2008 FIBA Europe Young Women's Player of the Year.
The 1.95m center was a force on the youth level in the summer of 2008, averaging 20.8 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.3
blocked shots per game for Lithuania at the U20 European Championship Women.
|Petronyte played key minutes for Lithuania as they qualified for EuroBasket Women 2009.|
She also competed for the senior national team as she averaged 9.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in helping lead the Lithuanians to qualification for EuroBasket Women 2009 in Latvia.
At the domestic level Petronyte played a key role for TEO Vilnius in their run to the Eighth-Final Play-Offs of EuroLeague Women where they fell to UMMC Ekaterinburg.
"Gintare is one of the leading lights for Lithuania and I am very much looking forward to seeing her this June at EuroBasket Women." commented FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos.
"I've seen Gintare at the youth level the last couple of summers and she gets more and more impressive as the years go by." added FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin.
Petronyte edged out Alba Torrens of Spain and 2007 winner Sonja Petrovic of Serbia for the award, which selects its winners through a combination of fan voting and an expert panel of judges.
