Latvia To Host EuroBasket Women 2009

Latvia was selected as the host city for EuroBasket Women 2009 today in Warsaw, Poland during the fourth meeting of the Board of FIBA Europe for the 2006 – 2010 Term of Office.

Latvia will host the event in the cities of Liepaya, Ventpils,Valmiera and Riga.

“We are pleased to award the EuroBasket Women 2009 to Latvia,” said FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos.

“We are confident that they will be able to fulfill all the requirements in place for a host city and organise a superb event.”

Latvia has strong support from their government’s highest officials.

“From a state point of view, this is very important,” said Latvian Secretary of Sport Edgar Sneps following the country’s triumph.

“I think FIBA Europe made a good decision for European women’s basketball,” added Latvian Basketball Federation President Ojars Kehris.

“Basketball is the number one sport in our country and I think it is good for the region to have this event.”
