Polish native Kajetan Hadzelek was named an Honorary FIBA Europe Board Member at the opening of the General Assembly held today in Warsaw, Poland.
Born in 1930, Hadzelek has dedicated his life to sport, particularly basketball, as well as education.
A former player and coach, Hadzelek was a FIBA judge from 1969 – 2000.

He headed the Polish Basketball Federation as President from 1979 – 1990 and 1993 – 2000. After the completion of his Polish Basketball Federation presidency, he was named Honorary President of the organisation.
The humble Hadzelek was quick to credit others.
“Poland has done a great amount to develop basketball through various competitions, seminars and conferences,” he said.
“I have been able to work with a number of wonderful people and so I share this award with all them.”
At the Olympic level, Hadzelek has served as Vice President on the Polish Olympic Committee. Since 2005, he has been a Member of the Polish Olympic Committee Board.
For almost 50 years (1954 – 2000), Hadzelek worked at the Physical Education Academy. He was most recently the Head of the Sports History Department.
