FIBA Europe Visit Lithuania

On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos, Secretary General Nar Zanolin and Sports Director Kosta Iliev visited Lithuania.

During a ceremony as part of the anniversary, Vassilakopoulos was presented with a medal of honour in sports from Algirdas Raslanas, Director of Lithuanian Sports.

“It was an honour for me to be given this medal and to also take part in the Lithuania Basketball Federation’s 85th anniversary,” said Vassilakopoulos.

“Not only does this country have a rich basketball tradition, but it also has a bright basketball future.”

Along with taking part in the anniversary celebration, the three FIBA Europe officials met with the highest ranking government officials and national federation authorities to discuss preparations for EuroBasket 2011.

The group was headed by Gediminas Kirkilas, Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania, Valdemaras Sarapinas, Government Secretary, Zigmantas Balcytis, Minister of Finance, Andrius Kupcinskas, Mayor of Kaunas, Rimantas Mikaitis, Vice Mayor of Kaunas, Arturas Poviliunas, President of the Lithuanian Olympic Committee and Vladas Garastas, President of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation.

The government authorities provided assurance to FIBA Europe in regards to the construction of a new arena in Kaunas.

“The building of the arena in Kaunas is key to the ongoing preparations for EuroBasket 2011,” commented Zanolin.

“The positive government support for the arena exemplified to me that this country is well on its way to organising a successful event.”
