FIBA Europe Conducts Youth Basketball Conference

21 October 2005

FIBA Europe conducted a conference at the weekend in Vierumaki, Finland to discuss the future of youth basketball and specifically the U14 age category.

The conference was attended by Secretary General Nar Zanolin, Sports Director Kosta Iliev, Youth Commission President Asterios Zois and held in co-ordination with the FIBA Europe Youth Commission.

Over 30 national federations sent representatives to Finland, underlining the importance of youth basketball across Europe.

“This was the first time we have had a meeting with our federations that has focused on youth basketball and I have to thank the Finnish Basketball Federation for their initiative and exemplary organisation,” said Zanolin.

“The primary topic of conversation was the U14 category for which there are no official FIBA Europe competitions.

Over the last few years there have been many changes in the structure of how we deal with these very young basketball players. The goal for the future is to implement a strategy to ensure a consistent approach to these age groups and their development.

This meeting was the first step in that process and it was highly encouraging to see so many federations represented. It is now our task to continue working with these people and to decide upon how to create the best conditions for young basketball players in Europe.”
