FIBA Europe Nominate Mainini For FIBA Presidency

15 May 2010

At the FIBA Europe General Assembly on Saturday in Munich, Germany representatives of the 51 member federations chose Yvan Mainini of France as their nominee to become the next President of FIBA.

Mainini defeated outgoing FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos by earning 30 of 51 votes.

According to the principle of rotation current FIBA President Bob Elphinston of Australia, whose term expires this year, must be replaced by a representative from Europe.

"It's a fantastic result because I have dedicated all my life to basketball and I hope that basketball will be better and better." commented Mainini after the vote (watch his post-elections reaction here).

Mainini was a Member of the FIBA Europe Board for the term 2006-2010 and currently serves as President of the French Basketball Federation.

His election as President of FIBA is contingent on a vote at the FIBA World Congress in September.
