Spirou Charleroi heaped more misery on Group B cellar-dwellers BC Barons with an 80-66 win on Tuesday night.
Barons have now lost all five of their matches while Spirou Charleroi, who had already booked their place in the next round with last week's win over Khimik Yuzhny, improved their record to 4-1.
The Belgian hosts took control early on with power forward Sacha Massot scoring seven points to help his side establish a 13-4 lead, before Spirou Charleroi ended the first period 22-17 ahead.
A Gregory Grays lay-up then increased the lead to 24-17, but Barons center Martins Skirmants responded with a lay-up of his own to spark a 10-0 run that put the Latvian side ahead for the first time in the match at 27-24.
Skirmants went from hero to villain soon after though, turning the ball over to Ralph Biggs, who raced away before putting Spirou Charleroi back in front at 28-27.
Spirou Charleroi never again trailed in the match after that, going on a 13-3 streak to take a 41-30 lead, before extending that advantage to 65-46 in a one-sided third period.
Barons threatened a brief fightback by scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the final quarter.
But two three-pointers from Spirou Charleroi guard Beye Tabu-Eboma in rapid succession ended the Barons recovery and sent the home side on their way to a 16-point victory.
Barons guard Alton Mason scored a match-high 19 points, while for the victors Kris Sergeant (16 points and three rebounds), Grays (14 points and Damir Krupalija (10 points and 10 rebounds) enjoyed successful nights. |
