Avenida Finish With A Win

Halcon Avenida ended their Group B campaign in style with a 70-65 win at the expense of MiZo Pecs whom they will join in the next phase.

The Spanish side trailed 51-49 at the end of the third quarter but then Clara Bermejo Moreno got the first bucket of the final period to level things up.

Anna Montañana played a key role in Avenida's win.
Anna Montanana's jump shot then gave the hosts the lead and, although it remained tight for the remainder of the contest, they never surrendered it.

"We are satisfied with our first experience in EuroLeague Women," said Avenida head coach Jose Hernandez.

"We beat one of the most important teams in Europe and we have been competitive except against Namur."

Two free throws from MiZo's Simone Anne-Marie Edwards brought it back to 65-64 but Nicole Ohlde held the Salamanca-based side together by replying with a jump shot.

Two Nicole Powell free throws made it 69-64 and there was still time for Pecs' Dalma Ivanyi and Bermejo Moreno to add one more apiece from the charity stripe, but it wasn't enough for Pecs.

"I'm very happy," said Ohlde, who scored nine points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

"We played a very good game against one of the greatest teams in Europe."

Powell led the way with 22 points, while Montanana (14) and Bermejo Moreno (10) also hit double-digits.

Powell was unerring from the free throw line, converting all seven attempts and was three from five inside the paint and three from six outside.

For Pecs, Timea Ivkovicne Beres scored 16 points with Edwards (12) and Vickie Johnson (11) also impressing.

"We didn't play well enough to win this game," said MiZo Pecs head coach Laszlo Ratgeber.

"Rebounding was one of the keys to our defeat."

Pecs were outrebounded 33-27.

"The game has been very physical, we defended tough and strong all the game," Hernandez added.

"We played a good defense on Ivanyi and Johnson and we grabbed lots of defensive rebounds."

The Hungarians finish with a 6-4 record while Halcon managed 4-6.
