BC Kyiv are one of the powerhouses of Ukrainian basketball and that is likely to continue with high-scoring guard LaMarr Greer now back in the fold.
The EuroCup All-Star, who helped BC Kyiv reach the 2005 FIBA Europe League final and last year's EuroCup Final Four, worked out with the Toronto Raptors in the pre-season but was not signed by the NBA club.
That paved the way for the 1.96m guard to come back to Ukraine.
In his very first game under new coach Victor Berezhnoi on Thursday, an 88-81 triumph over Budivelnik Kyiv, Greer erupted for 22 points.
"I'm glad to return to Kyiv," Greer said to bckiev.com.ua.
"My family and I feel great here and that is very important.
"Right now, I'm ready to help my team to reclaim the Ukrainian title and to win the EuroCup."
BC Kyiv were on course for a glorious double-winning 2005-06 season but in front of their own fans after being awarded the EuroCup Final Four, then coach Renato Pasquali's men fell 88-78 to DKV Joventut in a hard-fought semi.
Unlike the year before, when they had slipped up to St Petersburg in the European final, Kyiv were unable to save their season as Azovmash pipped them to the Ukrainian title.
Greer was injured for part of last season and was limited to just 11 games in the EuroCup, but he averaged 14.8 points in 11 games.
After the season, Pasquali announced he was returning to Italy so Kyiv turned to Berezhnoi.
For the current campaign, one player likely to have a big say is experienced Ukrainian center Grygorii Khizhniak, who joined in the summer.
In support are 1.84m guard Aaron Lukas, 1.98m international forward Artur Drozdov and 2.1m center Oleksiy Pecherov, a first-round draft pick of the Washington Bullets this summer who is not yet ready for the rigours of the NBA.
Another certain to provide a lot of points from the perimeter is 1.87m Israeli guard Avi Soucar, who averaged almost 13 points per game last year in the EuroCup for Nahariya.
Kyiv can also call upon 2.03m forward Milan Dozet, who has arrived from another EuroCup side, KK Vojvodina in Serbia.
BC Kyiv open their EuroCup campaign at home against Liege Basket on November 7, with Group E games to follow against UNICS Kazan and BC Kalev. |
