Russia: Kurtinaitis Named As New Perm Coach

05.07.2006

EuroCup Challenge winners Ural Great Perm have appointed Rimas Kurtinaitis as their new coach.

The 46-year-old Lithuanian has signed a two-year contract with the Russian outfit with the option of extending the deal for a further year.

Kurtinaitis, who was an Olympic champion with the Soviet Union in 1988, has been working his way up the coaching ladder since calling time on his playing career.

He led Lithuania's U20 national side to European Championship silver in 2005 and followed that up with gold at the FIBA U20 World Championships in Argentina. In 2006, he took over senior national team duties with Azerbaijan, guiding them to Promotion Cup gold at the tournament in Malta.

Kurtinaitis also has experience coaching in European club competition and has spearheaded Azerbaijan side BC Gala's last two EuroCup Challenge campaigns.

Kurtinaitis will take over a Perm side that won the EuroCup Challenge earlier this year under Sharon Drucker, beating Khimik Yuzhny over two legs in the final.

Perm also reached the quarter-finals of the Russian Superleague play-offs where they lost 3-1 to Dynamo St Petersburg.
