Russia: Ural Great Suffer Setback

02.12.2006

Ural Great could not take advantage of a fine first quarter performance as they slipped to an 88-83 defeat to Sibirtelekom-Lokomotiv in the Superleague.

The hosts got off to a flying start, scoring 26 to Lokomotiv's 12 to establish some early dominance.

The visitors hit back soon afterwards, winning the second quarter by 11 points to eat away at the deficit and further victories in the third and fourth quarters (27-20 and 23-22 respectively) secured a five-point win.

Stanislav Makshantsev was Ural-Great's star performer, contributing 24 points and 12 rebounds to claim an impressive double-double.

Zelimir Zagorac also put in a solid display with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

But it was the 31-point top-scoring performance from visiting star Anatoli Serguienko that stole the show.

Melvin Booker (BC Khimki)

Meanwhile, Dynamo Moscow Region were beaten by city rivals Khimki who ran out 73-61 victors.

The visitors won three of the four quarters, with Dynamo only edging ahead in the first period, which they won 21-13.

They failed to break the 20-point barrier in each of the following three sessions as Khimki took control of proceedings, spurred on by Melvin Booker's 24-point showing.

Nobody else could match his scoring, with team-mates Vitali Fridzon and Oscar Torres each adding 11 and Dinamo pair Roderik Blakney and Joshua Davis top-scoring for the home side with 10 apiece.

In other news in Russia, Spartak of St Petersburg have signed Senegal international Bonifacy Ndong.

The 29-year-old spent last season in America with Los Angeles Clippers, where he averaged 2.2 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Ndong has previously spent time in Europe with German outfit Bamberg and French side Dijon.

Elsewhere, Spartak-Primorye have completed the signing of 34-year-old Andrei Fetisov.

The veteran center has played for CSKA Moscow, Dynamo Moscow, UNICS, Avtodor and Lokomotiv Rostov - who he represented last season. UNICS have also been active in the transfer market, signing Dmitri Sokolov.

The 21-year-old spent last season with Lokomotiv Rostov but will now spend next year with the Kazan-based outfit.

Spartak-Primorye, meanwhile, have parted company with Tomas Nagis following an incident in the club's Superleague clash against Sibirtelecom Lokomotiv which resulted in some damage to the sports hall.

The club's official website said: "Such behaviour isn't acceptable in professional basketball and causes some damage to the club's image."
