Hot Rod Stars for Russians

Roderick Blakney produced a superb all-round display to help Dynamo Moscow Region see off Khimik Yuzhny 91-75 in the second round of matches in EuroCup Group B.

The American point-guard recorded team-highs in points (18), rebounds (six) and assists (three), while he also blocked one shot as Dynamo made it two wins from two.

Dynamo were quickly into their stride and a dunk from Fedor Likholitov helped put the hosts 12-3 up midway through the first period.

But Ukrainians Khimik, who narrowly lost their opening match to Spirou Charleroi, wrestled the initiative back off their opponents to take a six-point lead at 26-20 in the second quarter.

Khimik then extended that advantage to seven points at 48-41 when Yaroslav Zubrytskyy made a pair of free throws three minutes into the third quarter.

That was as good as it would get for the visitors though, as Dynamo gradually whittled away the difference before taking the lead 55-54 on the back of Igor Zamansky's lay-up near the end of the third period.

That proved to be the turning point of the match as Dynamo, who never again trailed, pulled away from Khimik with relative ease before a strong finish in the final quarter resulted in an impressive 16-point victory.

Aside from Blakney, Zamansky also shone for Dynamo with a 17-point haul and five rebounds, while Lithuanian Audrius Giedraitis added 15 points and three boards.

Khimik were largely indebted to two players for their points, with Wykeen Kelly leading all scorers with 24, and Aleksandar Djuric adding 20.

The next-best scorer for Khimik was Aleksandar Subara with six points.
