Strong Opening Period Sees ASK Riga To Victory

Latvia is making headlines in the basketball world and not just because of the amazing start to the NBA season by Andris Biedrins.

ASK Riga are off to a fast start in the EuroCup, with Tuesday's 77-67 victory over CEZ Nymburk their third success in four EuroCup games.

Curtis Millage has been influential in all of their games and this one was no exception with the American point guard scoring 21 points, handing out three assists and coming up with four steals.

ASK Riga hit the Group F summit although Maroussi Athens could join them on seven points with a success against winless KK Vojvodina in their game.

An impressive first quarter was the launchpad for victory for Millage and Co.

Nymburk jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but a 15-0 run by the home side saw Riga seize command.

In the first quarter overall, Sandis Valters, a probable team-mate of Biedrins at next year's EuroBasket in Spain, had the hot hand for the home side, scoring 11 of his 19 points. He buried three of his four three-pointers for the game in that opening frame.

Nymburk trailed 25-14 by the end of the first quarter.

They pulled to within five in the second quarter and six in the third, but Riga won comfortably in the end.

Radoslav Rancik had 13 points and eight rebounds for Nymburk, who are now 1-3 in the competition and needing to win their final two games to have a chance of advancing to the next phase.
