USK Prague Ends Brno's Nine-Year Winning Streak

11.02.2007

Gambrinus Sika Brno haven't lost many games in the past decade in Europe while in the Czech top flight, they hadn't lost any!

The Czech giants had gone nine years and three days without losing a  league game but that streak is now over after Jan Bobrovsky and Co fell at home on Saturday to fellow EuroLeague Women outfit, USK Prague.

Lubor Blazek's team needed overtime, but eventually scraped an 81-79 win to bring an end to one of the most incredible runs in European basketball history.

Brno seemed to be in control of the game, up 73-66 with just over two minutes in regulation.

Sviatlana Volnaya (ZVVZ USK Prague)
Sviatlana Volnaya scored 29 points for ZVVZ USK Prague.
But USK Prague went on a 7-0 run to tie the score and send the game to overtime.

Svietlana Volnaya was the architect of Brno's demise, scoring a season-high 29 points while French veteran Sandra Le Drean weighed in with 18.

Le Drean made the key basket in overtime as her jumper from the top of the key gave USK Prague a 80-79 advantage with 55 seconds remaining, an advantage that her side would not relinquish.

Deanna Nolan led Brno with 22 points.

“We played a good match,” said USK Prague coach Lubor Blazek.

"We were playing very well on both sides of the court and in the end we had a bit of luck."

“I am sad that we lost this game," said Bobrovsky.

"Even though we didn’t play well today, we should win, but we wasted many good scoring opportunities."

Brno had won 256 consecutive games in the domestic league.

The last team to beat them was none other than USK Prague on February 7, 1998. Prague also won that game away from home, 86-71.

Brno have the majority of the country's leading players who won the EuroBasket Women in 2005.

According to www.basket.idnes.cz, their biggest win in the consecutive games streak came in 2002 when they rolled to a 140-point triumph over Prerov, after leading led 53-2 at the end of the first quarter.
