Streimikyte Stars In Vilnius Win

20 December 2006

Teo Vilnius won for the fourth time in their last five EuroLeague Women games with a thrilling 65-60 triumph over MKB Euroleasing.

Lithuanian international Jurgita Streimikyte, a 34-year-old forward who is one of the true greats in her country, poured in 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Vilnius.

Hungarians MKB have had an outstanding campaign with Teo one of the scalps they claimed in an 85-76 victory back on November 15 in Sopron.

Andrea Balas-Pirine Karolyi was the leading scorer in that game for MKB, pouring in 23 points but on Tuesday she was a non-factor in less than seven minutes on the floor.

Instead it was Ivana Matovic (14 points), Olexandra Gorbunova (13) and Albena Branzova (12) who led a terrific fightback in the second meeting.

Teo appeared to be cantering to victory in this one, storming out to a 45-30 lead at the start of the third quarter on Sandra Valuzyte's jump shot.

Valuzyte had 17 points in the game.

When Katie Douglas collected her first assist while setting up Streimikyte for a jumper at the end of the third quarter, the hosts' lead was 47-34.

MKB weren't done, however.

Gorbunova started the fourth period with a jumper and Matovic followed with a three-point play.

Branzova reeled off five straight points with a lay-up and a three-ball, and suddenly Teo Vilnius were shaking, clinging to a 47-44 advantage.

MKB Euroleasing pulled level at 49-49 on another Matovic three-point play, and at 51-51 when Branzova scored on a jumper.

A Gorbunova basket would tie the contest at 55-55, and she then capped the fightback with a three-point play to give the visitors a 58-57 advantage.

Teo Vilnius held their nerve, though.

Valuzyte drove to the basket, scored and earned a trip to the line after being hit by Matovic.

She converted the three-point play for a 60-58 lead.

Reka Cserny and Gorbunova missed shots the next time down the floor for MKB, Teo rebounded and held on for victory over the final minute of play.

The free throw line played a big part in the win for Teo, who sank 14 of 33 (63.6%).

MKB Euroleasing were just five of 11 (45.4%).
