King Crowns Big Game With Crucial Block
// 30.01.2007

DTL EKA AEL Lemesos edged Estudiantes 63-62 in overtime to boost their chances of reaching the quarter-finals of the EuroCup.

Michael King, who led the Cypriot team with 16 points and five rebounds, blocked a potential game-winning lay-up by Sergio Sanchez Cardenas at the death to preserve the victory.

King had put the home side in front with 22 seconds left when he split two free throws.

It is a hugely disappointing result for the Spanish side that had won its previous three games in Round II and looked to be on its way to a fourth
victory in Cyprus after twice building nine-point leads in the first half.

Will McDonald's lay-up right on the buzzer had sent the Madrid club to the changing rooms at half-time with a 38-29 lead.

Lemesos came storming back and moved in front with less than three minutes to go in the third quarter at 42-41, but neither side was able to take a firm grip on proceedings.

No more than five points separated the two sides for the remainder of regulation.

When Francisco Mendiburu Urgell scored with 42 seconds left, Estu had a 59-57 lead.

They couldn't hold on, though. Ryan Randle attempted a three-pointer and missed for Lemesos, but Jeron Roberts rebounded and the home team then tied the contest when King's jump shot fell through the rim.

Iker Iturbe, who played for Spain at the Athens Olympics, missed a
three-pointer at the end and the game went to overtime.

A Carlo Suarez three-ball gave Estu a 62-60 advantage with 2:21 to play, only for King to tie the game again with another jumper with just under two minutes remaining in the extra session.

King was eventually fouled and converted one of his two chances from the line before making his dramatic block to win the game.

Both clubs are 3-1 in Group I after this contest.
