France: ASVEL Go Down To Orleans

27.01.2007

Orleans took sole possession of fourth place in Pro A - for 24 hours at least - thanks to a 66-63 comeback victory over visiting Adecco ASVEL on Friday night.

The hosts looked down and out at the end of the third quarter, with ASVEL - one of France's EuroCup entrants this season - 10 points up (55-45).

But a final-period revival saw Philippe Herve's side home, with big man Zeb Cope (12 points and five rebounds) particularly impressive.

ASVEL, who did not make it into Round II of the EuroCup, had superb performances from Brian Greene (17 points and 10 rebounds) and Chevon Troutman (20 points and eight rebounds) but their team-mates did not follow suit.

They now have a 10-9 record.

In other French basketball news, JDA Dijon center Mario Bennett has been ruled out of action for up to two months after fracturing a bone in his foot.

The American big man underwent tests this week and they revealed a fractured metatarsal in his right foot.

His recovery time has been estimated at six to eight weeks, meaning the 33-year-old will definitely miss next month's Semaine des As as well as a host of Pro A fixtures.

Bennett is averaging nine points and nine rebounds in France's top flight this season.

Dijon are scouring the market looking for a replacement.

The club are back in EuroCup action next week - they play Virtus Bologna in Group L on Tuesday.

Dijon have a 1-2 record so far, and will be boosted by their 75-74 victory over BC Kalev this week.

Bennett is not in Dijon's EuroCup squad for this season.
