Adecco ASVEL's season suffered another setback on Wednesday, and there is every chance their failure on the European stage could be repeated on the domestic front.
Having already been knocked out of the EuroCup following a third-placed finish in Group H, Yves Baratet's team are now struggling to qualify for the end-of-season Semaine des As.
Their latest defeat - their third in four Pro A matches - came on Wednesday night at Clermont, the hosts running out 63-55 winners in a low-quality contest.
Injuries meant ASVEL used just seven players on the night, and not even Laurent Foirest could lift the team.
Foirest, usually a stellar performer, could only grab three points and two rebounds.
Fellow forward Brian Greene was the visitors' leading points scorer with 14, while he also grabbed nine boards.
Baratet was full of praise for Clermont's defense, which was strong all game.
"We came into the match hoping to make up for our defeat to Strasbourg before Christmas, and climb into fourth place in the table," he said.
"I take my hat off to Clermont for their great defensive performance."
ASVEL are now in joint seventh position on 23 points and, with only the top seven sure to qualify for the Semaine des As, they are in danger of missing out.
Clermont are two points adrift in joint 13th. |
