France: ASVEL Expect To Make Signings Soon

05 July 2006

ASVEL sporting manager Pierre Grall fully expects his club's recruitment will eventually be a success.

The French high-flyers signed France international Aymeric Jeanneau on a two-year contract in mid-June but have since struggled to secure the services of any more players.

But Grall is confident of signing more players in the near future with the European club competition and Pro A campaigns forthcoming.

"We hope to seal a few deals by next Monday on French and American players," he said.

"As far as American players are concerned, they will have to suit the club in terms of complementary and versatility qualities.

"But we will not take inconsiderate risks. We will only take players who have an experience of European basketball.

"Out of the three American players we wish to sign, we might take a risk on one of them only.

"We are looking for a small or shooting guard, a power forward that can also play as a center, and a center.

"We should sign one on Monday, maybe two."

Grall also played down rumours Stephen Brun was on the verge of leaving the club.

The center was called up on Monday by national and ASVEL coach Claude Bergeaud along with four other players to join the French team this weekend and start their preparations for the FIBA World Championship.

"We were very clear with Stephen," said Grall. "We told him what we were expecting from him next campaign and he said he was happy with it.

"Then we found out that other clubs had contacted him, which is hardly acceptable. Anyway, all this made Stephen hesitate about his future.

"We are just going to have to discuss again with him and repeat what we want and need from him next year.

"We cannot afford seeing a player we count on having doubts every time he is coveted by another team."
