Spain: De Pablos Replaces Martinez As Estu Head Coach

07 February 2007

Mariano de Pablos has taken over as coach of Estudiantes following the dismissal of Pedro Martinez.

Martinez parted company with Estu on Wednesday after failing to halt the club's dramatic slide down the ACB standings.

Last weekend's 83-78 defeat to second-bottom Grupo Capitol Valladolid was Estu's 10th league defeat in their last 11 matches, and proved to be the end of the line for Martinez.

Estu's domestic form, where they have a 7-13 record for the overall season, is in stark contrast to their performances in the EuroCup.

They swept through the opening phase of that competition with five wins in six matches, and currently sit atop their Round II group with a 3-1 record.

A club statement read: "Estudiantes want to sincerely thank the professionalism and work that Pedro Martinez has done at the club for the last year and a half.

"Estudiantes wish the greatest of success to Martinez in his professional future."

The new man in charge at Estu is 32-year-old De Pablos, who was been an assistant coach at the Madrid outfit for the last two years.
