Fenerbahce Flatten Lotos Gdynia

Fenerbahce wasted no time in making their mark on the EuroLeague Women as they thrashed Polish giants Lotos Gdynia 79-59 in first round action on Thursday.

Treble winners on the Turkish domestic scene last season, they look determined to rattle some cages in Europe.

The home side's Saziye Karsli, a 24-year-old Turkish international forward, got hot from long range and finished with 19 points while Canada national team center Tammy Sutton-Brown had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with her eight points in the Group C game.

Cappie Poindexter, the pride of Oceanside, San Diego, weighed in with 18 points for the Istanbul team and German national team star Linda Frohlich also had a big effort, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Fener quickly got into their stride and led 28-17 at the end of the first quarter.

After holding a 39-29 advantage at half-time, they took a 63-41 stranglehold on the game by the end of the third quarter.

With Sutton-Brown and Frohlich in good form, Fenerbahce controlled the
boards 48-35 on the night.

From three-point range, Fener rode the hot hand of Karsli who was five of seven (71.4%) and as a team, they ended up nine of 24 (37.5%).

American Tamika Whitmore did a little bit of everything for Lotos Gdynia, scoring a game-high 23 points, pulling down nine boards, handing out two assists and coming up with a steal.

It was all for nought as the visitors crashed to a heavy defeat.
