MiZo Pecs Hold On For Victory
// 30.11.2006

MiZo Pecs withstood a late fightback by last year's domestic champions of Spain, Halcon Avenida, to prevail 65-57 in their EuroLeague Women Group B encounter on Thursday.

Vickie Johnson (MiZo Pécs)

Leading 58-46 with four minutes remaining after a jumpshot from Hungarian international Dalma Ivanyi, MiZo looked to be on their way to a comfortable victory.

However, the visitors from Salamanca clawed their way back to 58-55 with Nicole Powell scoring seven of her game-high 22 points in the 9-0 run.

Australia's Jennifer Whittle, a MiZo center, calmed her team's nerves with a jumper after receiving a pass from Ivanyi and Timea Ivkovicne Beres added a lay-up as the hosts held on.

The Spaniards showed great resolve in the game after falling behind in the first half.

After a Powell three-pointer had tied the contest at 23-23, MiZo Pecs reeled off six consecutive points to get their noses in front and that lead had doubled by the fourth quarter.

Halcon Avenida fought hard, but lost in a battle of 2-2 teams.

Vicky Johnson led the winners with 16 points and Ivanyi had 13 while Whittle, who captured a gold medal with Australia at the FIBA World Championship in Brazil this summer, finished with 10.
