Muiznieks Turns Riga Into Title Town

When Barons LMT Riga picked Coach Karlis Muiznieks to lead them last summer they were probably hoping he would bring with him some of his winning mentality.

Muiznieks was one of the best Latvian players during the 1990's and played a couple of times in EuroBasket with the national team in addition to winning local titles.

Gustas Takes Home Final Four MVP

The 2008 edition of the EuroCup Final Four presented five players who stood out in the two game days of the competition and were named to the All-Tournament team.

The trophy lifters from Riga - Barons LMT sent two representatives, including the MVP while the finalist from Belgium - Dexia Mons-Hainaut are represented by two as well, while hosts Proteas EKA AEL finalize the group of five.

BC FMP Belgrade is one of Serbia's youngest clubs, but also one of the finest.

Founded in 1975, this club from the Belgrade suburb of Zeleznik reached the top flight in 1997 and is widely regarded as a ‘talent factory' - and not just because its juniors are the reigning champions of Europe.

Berlin, Germany played host to the draw for the newly named EuroChallenge on Tuesday as the names of the teams participating in Qualifying Round 1 were drawn and the potential match-ups for Qualifying Round 2 were also set.

The teams will play home and away games to determine who will advance to Qualifying Round 2 with the team drawn first hosting the opening game. Eight teams will eventually advance out of the two qualifying rounds to take part in the EuroChallenge Regular Season.

FIBA Europe has announced the procedure for the EuroChallenge draw, which will take place in Berlin, Germany, on Tuesday.

A total of 32 clubs will enter Qualifying Round I. Sixteen clubs are seeded, according to their results in previous FIBA Europe competitions, in their national championships and their country coefficient and they will not be drawn against each other.

With the draw for the three main European basketball competitions scheduled for next week in Berlin the teams who will be participating have been named.

FIBA Europe's new competition EuroChallenge (formerly EuroCup) will feature eight teams who will qualify directly to the first qualifying round.  That list includes 2008 EuroCup finalists Dexia Mons-Hainaut of Belgium and Italian side Virtus Bologna.

FIBA Europe announced on Wednesday the premier of a new competition for men's clubs to replace the EuroCup, to go by the name EuroChallenge. 

The EuroChallenge is the direct result of a renewed effort by FIBA Europe and ULEB to cooperate in the growth of basketball across Europe.
