Eight new referees have been added to the Euroleague's Referee List for the upcoming season, following a meeting between the referee supremos of FIBA Europe and Euroleague Basketball, on June 16th.
Miguel Betancor and Costas Rigas, the two former FIBA referees who are now the FIBA Europe Referee Co-ordinator and Euroleague Director of Referees respectively, met to discuss the selection of referees for the Euroleague and Eurocup competitions and the future collaboration between the two organisations.
The FIBA Europe Referee Coaches had previously met with Richard Stokes from the FIBA Europe Referee Department to discuss the progress of their groups of referees and to draw up a list of possible candidates to be added to the Euroleague List.
"There are still a few things to discuss, including a system for a future joint evaluation of the referees, but this is a good start toward our future co-operation," commented Betancor.
"Eight new referees have been added," said Rigas, who was also in Las Palmas to observe the Instructors meeting. "This is an important time for developing referees as a number of the more experienced referees are expected to retire this year and in the next two or three seasons. We look forward to our continuing collaboration."
The eight referees added to the Euroleague's Referee List: Haris Bijedic (BIH), Alfred Jovovic (CRO), Moritz Reiter (GER), Ioannis Foufis (GRE), Carmelo Lo Guzzo (ITA), Igor Dragojevic (MNE), Tomasz Trawicki (POL), Sergio Silva (POR).
