F.Y.R of Macedonia has a new champion.

MZT Skopje, taking on a club that had won the previous two Superleague crowns and three of the last four, Feni Industri, wrapped up a 3-1 series victory with an 81-74 triumph.

It is the first Superleague title for MZT.

MZT overcame an early seven-point deficit on the road in Game 4 and outscored Feni 26-12 in the second quarter to lead 43-36 at half-time.

Feni shaved four points off that deficit in the third quarter but the Aleksandar Todorov-coached MZT, who got 21 points from Igor Mijajlovic, held on for the victory.

Todorov saluted his players, and also paid tribute to those who had worn the MZT shirt before.

"First, I would like to thank my players who withstood a lot of pressure this season," he said.

"I had the honour and pleasure to train a group of 12 players, which is the best group I've ever trained.

"I would especially like to thank all previous coaches and players whose work over the years helped MZT to reach this level.

"This is not the best team MZT has ever had, nor am I the best coach that was in the team, but due to various circumstances, they failed to do what we did today."

Todor Gechevski, a member of the F.Y.R of Macedonia national side that made a stunning run to a fourth-place finish at last year's EuroBasket in Lithuania, followed up his 21-point effort in his team's Game 3 win with 14 more for MZT.

Gechevski capped a terrific year by being named MVP of the play-off finals.

Another of the F.Y.R. of Macedonia internationals in the MZT team, Gjorgi Chekovski, had eight rebounds to go with his 10 points in Game 4.

The fans of MZT expected their team to win the title after a dominating display in the regular season, when they won 22 of their 26 games in the Superleague.

MZT also won the domestic cup competition.

They brushed aside Torus with a 3-1 win in the semi-finals and then put an exclamation mark on their campaign by knocking off the two-time defending champions Feni.
