EuroCup Women club TSV 1880 Wasserburg reclaimed the German DBBL title on Friday, their seventh in total, with a 91-90 road win in overtime at Rhein-Main Baskets.

Starting the season as clear-cut favourites with big parts of Germany's national team in the squad, but struggling until after the Christmas-break, Bastian Wernthaler's squad turned it up a notch to claim their first title since 2011.

Former national team head coach Wernthaler, who had taken over the team prior to this season with a mission to re-establish domestic dominance delivered in his first attempt, giving the small Bavarian town reason to celebrate.

Wasserburg had taken a 2-1 series lead after each team was able to win their home games in the first three encounters and had the opportunity to claim the title with a road win.

In a hard-fought and exciting game four, the hosts gave the favourites a fight and twice had the chance to win the game with the last offence after 40 and 45 minutes respectively.

After 39 intense minutes in which Rhein-Main Baskets had chipped away with Wasserburg coming back in the final stanza, German international Katherina Fikiel hit two free-throws to tie the game at 84.

Rhein-Main guard Alyssa Karel missed a floater in the zone, meaning the game went into overtime.

There, both teams traded blows with neither of the opponents able to establish a bigger lead.

With the game tied at 90-apiece, Fikiel was fouled and made her first free-throw. She intentionally missed the second, meaning Rhein-Main Baskets had 3.8 seconds to get a shot off.

The attempt from half-court was well off and Wasserburg stormed the court to start celebrations.

Wasserburg's Emma Cannon was crowned MVP after a stunning 38-point, 13-rebound performance in the decisive final, underlining her status as the dominant player in the league.
