Gold Cup 2006 Set To Tip Off In Amsterdam


Gold Cup 2006, the World Championships for Wheelchair Basketball, will tip-off in Amsterdam, the Netherlands this Monday.

France, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden will represent Europe in the 12-team men’s competition, while France, Germany and the Netherlands will participate in the women’s eight-team tournament.

The competition will take place from July 3-16 and will be held at Amsterdam’s Sporthallen Zuid, which seats 3,500.

“The expectations are high for both the men and women’s competitions and we expect to see a high level of play,” said Ron Coppenrath, Secretary General for the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation European Zone.

Coppenrath sees Great Britain as the strongest European squad on the men’s side and Germany as the best European women’s squad.

The Gold Cup 2006 serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.
