The basketball competition of the Games of the Small States of Europe that were held in Luxembourg from 27 May until 1 June proved to be a huge success, especially for the host nation.

Over the course of a week, thousands of fans found their way to the national sports facility, d'Coque, in Luxembourg City, and turned the competition into a major event.

More than 2,500 fans, including FIBA Europe President Olafur Rafnsson, attended the women's final between Luxembourg and Iceland, a game which could hardly be topped in terms of suspense and excitement with the lead changing no less than 13 times.

Eventually the happy ending belonged to Luxembourg, who came out 62-59 winners. What made the win even sweeter for Luxembourg was that Iceland competed with their entire top team, including their star Helena Sverrisdottir (17 points and 16 rebounds) of EuroLeague Women powerhouse Good Angels Kosice.

Cyprus won the bronze medal by beating Malta 49-58.

The men's final saw Luxembourg take on Cyprus. Although the Luxembourgish squad, energized by their 4,500 fans tried their best, they could not prevent the 67-79 loss against the favorites from the Mediterranean.

Antony King poured in 23 points and corralled nine rebounds while Iakovos Panteli added 18 points for the winning side. Billy McDaniel's 19 points and 8 rebounds and Tom Schumacher's 13 points proved not enough for Luxembourg. Cyprus played out their strengths effectively and lead throughout the entire game. The bronze medal went to Iceland.
