Asseco Prokom Gdynia were crowned Polish Champions 2011/12 after a dramatic series against Trefl Sopot

Asseco Prokom Gdynia needed seven games but they finally saw off the challenge of Trefl Sopot with a 78-67 victory on Wednesday night to win the PolishTauron Basket Liga title for the ninth consecutive season.

Lithuania international Donatas Motiejunas, who is to play in the NBA with the Houston Rockets next season, had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Andrzej Adamek€™'s squad in the decider, which was played before a sellout crowd in Gdynia.

Prokom appeared to take command in the first half.

In one first-quarter stretch they reeled off nine unanswered points and ended the frame on top, 20-16.

The advantage grew to 43-25 by half-time and ballooned to 23 points in the third quarter.

Sopot mounted an impressive comeback and pulled to within 62-49 with 10 minutes remaining, though.

They kept the pressure on, pouring in the first 10 points of the final frame to reduce the arrears to 62-59.

Motiejunas then came up big.

He made two free-throws, only for Luke Koszarek to score and reduce the deficit to three.

Motiejunas struck again with a basket and MVP of the play-off finals, Jerel Blassingame, buried a jumper to extend the advantage to 68-61.

Blassingame followed with a three-pointer to take the lead to 71-62 with 3:31 remaining and the Gdynia club never looked back.

Prokom had started the finals as if they were going to roll to the title.

They won the opener, 89-81, and followed that up with a 77-65 triumph.

Sopot then woke up and hammered Prokom 83-57 in Game 3.

After Prokom took a 3-1 series lead with a 79-71 victory, Sopot travelled to Gdynia and won Game 5 76-71 before returning home to scrape an 84-81 success and knot the series.

"We won two games at home and then we started playing too individually," Motiejunas said.

"Such also was the problem today (Wednesday night), but fortunately later on, we played our game and won. In the finals, nothing is easy."

Motiejunas will now embark on a career in the United States with the Houston Rockets.

Prokom fans will be cheering him on and dream that one day, maybe he'll return to the club and play for it again.

"You never know," he said.

"It's a great place to live, I was really happy here."
