BASKETBALL IN EUROPE
|Mateusz Ponitka, who will turn 19 in the summer, is considered one of the best of the current crop of young talents|
Asseco Prokom have pulled off a major coup by signing young Poland international Mateusz Ponitka.
One of the stars of last year's U18 European Championship where he averaged 15.3 points and 7.6 rebounds, Ponitka, a shooting guard, has left AZS Politechnika Warsaw for the Gdynia club.
He is expected to make his Prokom debut on Saturday at Anwil Wloclawek.
Prokom will consider themselves fortunate because there were clubs outside the country chasing the signature of Ponitka, one of Poland's top young talents.
"I received many offers, not only from Poland but also from abroad, i.e. Spain and Italy," he said.
"After thinking about it for a long time, I decided to sign with Gdynia.
"I am a young player and I want to improve, and here I have a perfect environment to make it happen.
"It's a club with history, multiple and current Polish champions."
By moving to Prokom, Ponitka will have an opportunity to play in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague.
Success doesn't come easy in that competition, with Prokom winning just one of their 10 games this season.
The Polish outfit did lose a handful of close games, however.
"I will have a chance to play in the Euroleague here," Ponitka said.
"Another factor is my matriculation exam, which I will take in Warsaw and from Gdynia, it's much closer to home."
Ponitka, who was speaking on Prokom's website, expressed a lot of gratitude to his former team and coach.
"I'd like to thank my former club, AZS Politechnika and coach Mladen Starcevic, without whom I would not be here."
