Former Soviet Star Alexander Belostenny Dead At 51


The Ukrainian basketball federation has announced the death of former Soviet Union captain Alexander M. Belostenny.

A European champion in 1979, '81 and '85, the 51-year-old Belostenny was living in Germany.

According to the Russian media, he died of lung cancer.

The Odessa-born Belostenny, who also won the 1982 world title in Bogota, Colombia, and the 1988 Olympic gold medal in Seoul, Korea, had maybe his biggest impact on the international game at the 1981 EuroBasket in Bratislava when he averaged 10.4 points and poured in 19 in each of the Soviets' last two Final Round games - victories over Spain and Israel.

The Ukrainian Basketball Federation said: "On behalf of all fans, we want to express our deep condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. The bright memory of Alexander M. Belostenny will always live in our hearts."
