Players, coaches, members and friends of basketball gathered in Dublin to celebrate the launch of Basketball Ireland today. Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr John O'Donoghue T.D., officially re-launched the governing body for basketball in Ireland, while Mr Nar Zanolin, Executive Director FIBA Europe flew in from Munich for the unveiling of the new look Basketball Ireland.
The re-launch of the National Governing Body for basketball in Ireland comes after a lengthy review of the sport and with a five year Strategic Plan now in place, new structures and systems are already in motion and a framework for the future of Basketball Ireland is in operation.
Speaking at the launch, President of Basketball Ireland, Tony Colgan said;
"We are here to celebrate the birth of a new organisation, Basketball Ireland. Perhaps it is more correct to say 're-birth' - our aims remain the same, it is only the way we approach our job that is being radically changed".
He continued, "Basketball Ireland is in for exciting times. This is an organisation with ambition, an organisation that knows what needs to be done and intends doing just that."
Minister O'Donoghue concluded the celebrations by launching the new image for Basketball Ireland saying, "It is a pleasure to be here to give my support and endorsement to the hard work of the officers, staff and volunteers involved in reaching this milestone which is now the reality called Basketball Ireland and I look forward to hearing of ongoing development and success in the future".
Chief Executive, Debbie Massey announced a new sponsorship deal signed with Italian sportswear giants, Errea, the new official gear supplier to all eleven Basketball Ireland national teams.
