|A minute of silence was held before all games at EuroBasket 2013 on 8th September as players paid their respects for those affected by the Uni Gyor tragedy on Saturday|
FIBA Europe was shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic accident on Saturday afternoon involving the team bus of Hungarian EuroLeague Women club Uni Gyor.
Uni Gyor were on their way to play a pre-season game against Sopron when their bus was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
The lives of Head Coach Akos Fuzy and General Manager Peter Tapodi were lost as a result of the accident, whilst young Serbian talent Natasa Kovacevic underwent amputation of her leg.
"This is truly a sad day for not only European, but world basketball," said Acting FIBA Europe President Cyriel Coomans.
"It is a sad reminder that we, the basketball community, are not immune to tragedy."
"My thoughts and prayers go out to everybody involved in the Uni Gyor basketball programme."
"The news of Saturday's tragic accident involving the Uni Gyor basketball club has left me truly stunned," said FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak.
"It is vital, that at the time of this tragedy, the European basketball family unites together and does all it can to assist the Uni Gyor basketball community, especially the families of those who have lost loved ones."
