BASKETBALL IN EUROPE
|Serbia international Milan Macvan contributed 13 points and nine rebounds in Galatasaray's triumph|
Galatasaray Medical Park will take on Banvit and Fenerbahce Ulker will go up against EuroChallenge 2012 champions Besiktas in the semi-finals of the Turkish Spor Toto Cup on Friday, in Eskisehir.
In an eagerly anticipated quarter-final clash on Thursday night, Galatasaray prevailed over Euroleague Top 16 side Anadolu Efes, 72-64.
Efes were leading 36-31 at half-time but Gala tightened the screws on defence after the interval and went on a 21-10 run that turned the tables and put them in control of the encounter.
Guard Jamont Gordon led the charge for Gala with 18 points, five assists and five rebounds while Serbian international Milan Macvan had 13 points and nine rebounds for the winners.
Another Serbian power forward, Dusko Savanovic, finished with 19 points and seven rebounds for Efes in a losing effort.
In the other Thursday quarter-final, BEKO Ligi leaders Banvit never allowed outsiders Hacettepe Üniversity to dream of an upset, as they took a firm grip on the contest almost right from tip-off and pulled away decisively in the third quarter.
Banvit even allowed themselves to slow down in the fourth and still won, 77-63, to make the semi-finals.
Vladimir Stimac led the balanced offence of the winners with 11 points and added six rebounds.
On Thursday, Fenerbahce had beaten EuroChallenge side Pinar Karsiyaka 77-69 and Besiktas had prevailed over TED Ankara, 86-77.
POLISH CUP SEMI-FINALS
PGE Turow will face Trefl Sopot and AZS Koszalin will battle it out with Assecco Procom Gdynia in the semi-finals of the Polish Intermarche Basket Cup, on Saturday.
Koszalin, as the hosts of the Final Four, had already secured their participation in the big weekend event.
Sopot had to work hard to punch their ticket, as they built a 15-point advantage over Anwil only to see their hosts slowly chipping away at the lead and get within one point just before the end of the third quarter.
They held on though to take the valuable road win, 79-72, behind a magnificent display by Croatian forward Sime Spralja, who went 10-for-11 from the floor and led all scorers with 24 points, while he also added seven rebounds.
Turow meanwhile came up with a strong second half to overpower Jezioro Tarnobrzeg 88-79, also on the road, thanks in great part to their balanced team effort on offence, as six of their players scored in double digits.
Prokom meanwhile took care of business early at Stelmet Zielona Góra and could even afford to loosen up a bit in the final quarter and still clinch an 83-74 victory.
Austrian international Rasid Mahalbasic led the winners with a solid double-double showing of 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Polish international Lukasz Koszarek collected a double-double of 15 points and 10 assists.
Acea Roma and Cimberio Varese are the first two semi-finalists of the BEKO Final Eight of the Italian Cup, after prevailing in two highly entertaining quarter-final clashes on Thursday.
The Romans stunned Euroleague side FoxTown Cantu 89-85, behind an enormous display by Italian international Luigi Datome, who finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Varese meanwhile dominated Final Eight hosts Emporio Armani Milano 92-74, as Mike Green led all scorers with 23 points and former U20 international Achille Polonara chipped in with 16 and four rebounds.
On Friday, Sassari face Enel Brindesi while reigning champions Montepaschi Siena go up against Reggio Emilia.
The two semi-finals take place on Saturday and the big final on Sunday.
