Gladyr Shoots To Thrill

Ukraine international Sergiy Gladyr will have an opportunity to show off the long-range shooting ability that made him a second-round pick of the NBA's Atlanta Hawks when he represents his new club Manresa in the three-point shooting contest at the Spanish Supercup on October 3.

Gladyr, coming off a busy summer in which he was not only selected by the Hawks but also helped Ukraine preserve their Division A status in the EuroBasket, faces stiff opposition in the contest.

He will go up against Spain captain Juan Carlos Navarro of Barcelona, Canada star Carl English of Caja Laboral, Real Madrid guard Louis Bullock, Pedro Robles of CB Murcia, Alan Voskuil of Fuenlabrada, Taquan Dean of Unicaja Malaga, Jaycee Carroll of Gran Canaria.

"I am very happy to take part in this three-point shooting contest as this represents an opportunity to show what I can do," he said.

"Last year, I participated in the three-point shooting contest in the Ukrainian League and I think the level of the CBA will be similar, or perhaps somewhat higher, since this is the second best league in the world.

"The mechanics will be the same, shooting and hitting as many as possible. I suppose it will be a different with more fans watching and another atmosphere.

"In Ukraine, I won the final with a mark of 16 from 30, but in Las Palmas I hope to do better. I know I am a foreigner in this league, but I hope to do my best.

"In the pre-season, I still have not shown all my qualities."

Gladyr has moved to the ACB from Superleague outfit MBC Nikolaev.

The 32-year-old Robles may be the favorite heading into the competition if last year was any indication. He hit a scintillating 48.8% (42 of 87) of his shots from behind the arc.
