BASKETBALL IN EUROPE
|FC Bayern Munich are not your typical newly-promoted club. The Bavarians' participation in the BEKO BBL has had a direct impact on attendance numbers and media interest |
With the play-offs coming up in the German BEKO BBL league, clubs and league officials look back at a successful regular season.
When it comes to spectator numbers, there is nothing to complain about.
For the sixth year in a row, a cumulative audience of over 1,000,000 fans watched the regular season games.
A total of 1,322,605 spectators were present at the 306 regular season games.
That makes up an average of 4,322 fans per game and is indeed a new record in the BEKO BBL.
"This feedback reflects the attractiveness of our league," BEKO BBL CEO Jan Pommer told the league's official website.
Although all clubs contributed to the attractiveness of the league, there are two major reasons for the surge in numbers.
With FC Bayern Munich competing in Germany's top-flight, the interest by media and fans has grown instantly.
The Bavarian powerhouse had 6,149 spectators on average, ranking third behind ALBA Berlin and reigning champions Brose Baskets Bamberg.
Secondly, ratiopharm Ulm have profited from their new arena.
Having moved from Kuhberghalle to ratiopharm arena in December 2011, the average spectator numbers went up from 2,918 in 2011 to 5,471 in 2012, an increase of 87.5 per cent.
ALBA Berlin stay on top for the fifth straight season.
The O2 World arena in the German capital has a capacity of 14,500 and ALBA have counted 10,971 spectators on average in 17 regular season games at home.
In terms of attendance, ALBA are in the top spot across European domestic leagues.
Asefa Estudiantes have as well amassed impressive numbers with an average of 10,233 spectators at their Spanish league (Liga Endesa) home games.
Overall, the Liga Endesa games have an average attendance of 6,469.
One game this season established a new all-time attendance record, as 15,504 spectators watched as Caja Laboral defeated Real Madrid at Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria-Gasteiz, on 9 April.
