Portugal Organises Biggest Event In Country History

03 April 2007

This past summer, Portugal qualified for EuroBasket for the first time since 1951.

Based on the country’s commitment to the sport, such success could be the norm rather than the exception.

The latest example of this came last week when the Portuguese Basketball Federation organised the biggest basketball event in country history which completely altered the nation’s rail network.

A train from the north of Portugal travelled to Portimão in the south with a total of 1,152 participants who took part in a five-day youth event for U14 and U16 boys and girls.

Upon arrival to Portimão, all 1,152 participants disembarked from the one train consisting of 11 wagons.

A total of 70 teams from 18 regional associations took part in 198 games.

Focus was not put solely on the players.

Coaching and refereeing clinics as well as the federation’s General Assembly also took place.

In total, over 100 people were involved in the organisation of the event.

“It was an unforgettable moment for everyone involved,” said Federation President Mario Saldanha.

“The event served as an excellent opportunity to observe the future talents of Portuguese basketball.”
