Slovakia Looking To Keep Women’s Reins In Chatman’s Hands

19 October 2009

Slovakia are hoping to sign women's national team boss Pokey Chatman to a new contract, the federation has announced.

Chatman guided the team into the EuroBasket last summer in Latvia and pushed them to within touching distance of a place in the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women.

But they suffered a Quarter-Final heartbreak against Belarus and then ended up missing out on a spot in the top five that was needed to earn a trip to the Czech Republic for next year's big event.

"I met with Pokey last week in New Orleans as part of a journey that I made to the USA," said Slovakia Basketball Federation president Rudolf Petrovsky.

"We are basically in agreement although the deal has not been completed. Pokey is negotiating with us, rightly so.

"She has a great interest in continuing with the work she has done with our team."

Slovakia will next summer play in qualifying games for the EuroBasket Women 2011 to be staged in Poland.
