25 September 2009

Many of Anete Jekabsone-Zogota's brightest moments in basketball have come in a Latvia jersey.

Now the 2007 FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year has decided to take a break from the national team and focus on her WNBA career.

"Before I went to play in the USA (in 2009), my summers were free and I was happy to play for Team Latvia," she said to

"Now it has changed. The WNBA is my priority. I feel it can help me develop and become a better athlete."

Jekabsone-Zogota, 26, stressed that she is not retiring from the national team.

"I`m not leaving the national team forever," she said.

"From the other side, I have helped it for many years and responded in all situations.

"I feel it`s time to think about myself as I`m not getting younger.

"Working hard without vacation, I will do harm to myself."

Jekabsone-Zogota played for Latvia in June when they hosted the EuroBasket averaged 20.3 points per game.

At the end of the tournament, after the Baltic side finished seventh and missed out on qualifying for the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women, Jekabsone-Zogota left for the United States to play in the WNBA for the first time.

She signed for the Connecticut Sun and averaged 9.4 points per contest.

Jekabsone-Zogota recently returned to Europe to play for three-time defending champions Spartak Moscow Region.
