Sheffield 3on3 Tournament - 7 and 8 July 2012
A total of 16 teams of girls under the age of 18 and nine in the Women's Open competed in the record-breaking Sheffield 3on3 Tournament

Friday's torrential rainfall in Sheffield could not prevent the basketball-crazy youth of the city from setting a new FIBA Europe 3on3 participation record over the weekend.

When it was all over on Sunday evening, a total of 371 games had been played at the Meadowhall Shopping Center during two days, involving 197 teams across 12 categories.

These unprecedented high numbers are even more impressive given that all omens on the eve of the Sheffield 3on3 Tournament were anything but promising.

A month's worth of rain fell in just hours and the river nearby the venue had risen enough to cause serious concern about whether the event could actually even take place.

But somehow, the experienced FIBA Europe 3on3 team managed to complete the quite elaborate set up before Saturday morning.

From then on, it was up to the excellent organisation of England Basketball, their dedicated staff and the youth of Sheffield to make a memorable event out of the tournament.

Their enthusiasm was so contagious that even the weather seemed to collaborate, with just over one hour of rainfall during the weekend, when all the game action was taking place.

England Basketball made sure everyone joined in the fun and left with something to remember.

Medals, goodie bags and some great prizes, including Great Britain basketball tickets for the Olympics, were handed out to the winners and spectators, while sponsor Baden gave away 600 balls in a shooting contest for fans.

On Sunday, England Basketball also provided wheelchairs for people to try out wheelchair basketball.
