Budapest Draws Curtain On 2012 Tour

The curtain fell on the 2012 Tour of FIBA Europe 3on3 on Saturday night with the conclusion of the last stop on the calendar, in Budapest (highlight video here).

The Hungarian capital provided the perfect stage to the grand finale of this season's Tour with over 9,000 spectators flocking to the center of the city, between Heroes' Square and Vajdahunyad Castle, throughout Saturday.

In that location, the FIBA Europe 3on3, Hungarian Basketball Federation and Streetball Challenge crews had already set up on Friday eight FIBA Europe courts, 23 Streetball courts, one center court, a main tribune with a seating capacity of over 1,000 and a light installation.

Everyone took part in the celebrations, as the occasion not only marked the end of the 2012 FIBA Europe 3on3 Tour but also the 100th anniversary of the Hungarian Basketball Federation and the 20th anniversary of Streetball Challenge in Hungary.

The games tipped off at 9am and finished at 8pm with 203 teams competing in just over 350 games throughout the day.

There were 15 age categories in total (U12, U14, U16, U18, U23, born between 1978-1988, born before 1977 for both genders and a mixed category).

Just like at every FIBA Europe 3on3 event during the 2012 Tour, the Budapest stop saw people of both genders and every age either compete or actively participate in side events

120 teams competed in the Streetball 3x3 for U23 competition, 16 teams in the 3x3 Centenary Cup for U18 championship, 55 teams in the 3x3 Centenary Cup for Budapest clubs and 12 teams took part in the 3x3 Centenary Cup for County Championship Winners, while there were also separate competitions for veterans and the mixed gender category.

All the winners received medals, trophies and Adidas t-shirts while there were plenty of special giveaways for the public that was encouraged to participate in a variety of side activities.

The entertainment program included shooting contests, dunk contests, autograph-signing sessions with six Hungarian 2012 Olympic medalists, concerts and hip-hop dancing shows while it all culminated with a VIP 3on3 game.
