10 August 2013

FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak was honoured to attend the birthday celebrations of Bulgarian basketball legend Simeon Varchev on Wednesday night.

Staying in Varna, Bulgaria for the U16 European Championship Women, Novak seized the opportunity to pass on his wishes to one of the most influential sports personalities of the country.

Varchev, who turned 70, received a special plaque from FIBA Europe for his contribution to European basketball.

The former national team coach of Bulgaria currently holds the office of director of the Palace of Sport and Culture in Varna, is a member of the Board of the Bulgarian basketball federation and the heart and soul of the club Cherno more Varna.

He shared his special anniversary with all key personalities of Bulgarian basketball in the past 40 years, including former players and coaches as well as the current administration of the Bulgarian basketball federation, Secretary General Eleonora Rangelova and President Georgi Glouchkov.

The relation between Varchev and Glouchkov has been a special one since the very beginning.

It was Varchev who sparked Glouchkov's career, pushing him to pick up basketball and mentoring his first steps as a player.

Glouchkov used his coach's advice wisely, becoming one of Europe's legendary big men.

Being drafted and signed by the Phoenix Suns in 1985, Glouchkov was a European pioneer in the NBA, successfully paving the way for the stars of today.

Besides Glouchkov, Varchev has inspired several Bulgarian internationals, including the twin brothers Kaloyan and Deyan Ivanov, who are currently starring for Bulgaria in the EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round.
