Liliana Ronchetti started playing basketball in Como, Italy at the age of 20 and would go on to complete a 25-year career at the age of 45 in Palermo. Ronchetti, or Lily as she was known to her team-mates, won four consecutive titles with Como in the 1950's and played 83 games for the Italian national team.

Just one year after her retirement, Lily died of an incurable illness. However, her name lived on in the form of the Ronchetti Cup. The Ronchetti Cup was introduced by FIBA in 1974 as a second competition to the European Cup for Women's Champions Clubs and ran until 2002.
