Mr. Dan Kesten - Obituary

22 June 2003

The world of basketball lost one of its most prized people Thursday, 19 June 2003. Mr. Dan Kesten, 65, died suddenly in his home in Tel Aviv shortly before rescue services arrived.

Kesten was born on 15 May 1938 and dedicated more than 10 years of his life to basketball in various roles, including president of the Israeli Basketball Association since 1993. Since 2001, he served as the President of the Commission for Competitions of FIBA Europe and as a member of the Board of FIBA Europe. One of his most recent contributions to basketball was his role in the creation of the FIBA Europe League.

His contributions to athletics extend to the National Olympic Committee of Israel, in which he served as a member of the Executive Board (since 1993) and as the chairman of the Finance Committee (since 2000).

Kesten's professional life did not begin with athletics, however. Rather, it began with El-Al Israel Airlines. After completing an undergraduate degree in the Middle East and Geography at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a law degree at Tel-Aviv University, Mr. Kesten began to work for the airline. His hard work and dedication led to international managerial positions and eventually to leadership positions as the vice president of manpower and administration followed by the vice president of customer service in 1993.

In addition, Kesten has held many governmental positions since 1984, including chairman of the Finance Committees of Tamam and Teshet and, most recently, chairman of the Audit Committee of the Israel Sport Betting Board.

Kesten also served in the Israel Defense Forces, where he earned the rank of captain. He served in the armoured corps and intelligence.

For his incredible contributions to his country, his education, and his professional career, Mr. Dan Kesten will be sorely missed.
