FIBA Europe Club Competition Draws attracts top stars

17 July 2003

Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July 2003 will see the draws for the 2003/2004 FIBA Europe club competitions taking place in Munich, Germany. The draw will not only be attended by over 400 delegates from the participating clubs and federations, but also several top names from the basketball world.

Representing Turkey will be national team and Sacramento Kings star Hidayet Turkoglu. Turkoglu began his career with Efes Pilsen in his hometown of Istanbul and played in over 50 FIBA Europe Club Competition games, reaching the EuroLeague Final Four in 2000. He followed that up by guiding Turkey to a silver medal at the 2001 European Championships. He has been a member of the Sacramento Kings since 2000 and is the first Turkish born player to play in the NBA.

The basketball coaching fraternity will be represented with the attendance of former Greek national team coach Costas Politis. Politis led Greece to a 1987 European Championship gold medal, the only time that Greece has achieved this honour.

Former stars will also be present at the draw, most notably Alexander Volkov (UKR) and Yannick Souvré (FRA). Volkov began his career in the former Soviet Union and won a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics and 1985 European Championships. He is now a member of the FIBA Europe Board and the Council of the FIBA Europe League. Yannick Souvré retired from playing last season after spending the majority of her career captaining one of the most successful clubs in Europe, Bourges (FRA). As well as winning 6 French championships, she also picked up 1 Ronchetti Cup and 3 EuroLeague Women titles. Since her recent retirement she has moved into the Bourges front office as the club's Sports Director. In addition, Souvré is the President of the FIBA World Women's Commission and the Vice-President of the FIBA Europe Women's Commission.

The city of Munich will be represented by Mr. Wilfrid Spronk, CEO of the Munich Olympiapark and Mr. Rudolf Behacker, Head of the City of Munich's Sports Department.
