EuroBasket 2009 Draw Complete

The eyes of European basketball were on Poland Saturday and the EuroBasket 2009 Draw held at the Capitol Theatre in Warsaw.

Dignitaries such as Serbian great Vlade Divac were on hand as the Preliminary Round groups were decided. 

The day also saw the draw for the Additional Qualifying Round which will determine who will earn the final spot at EuroBasket 2009, and the Relegation Round which will decide which two teams lose their spots in Division A.

Polish Basketball Federation President Roman Ludwiczuk welcomed everyone and was joined on stage by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior for Poland Grzegorz Schetyna and FIBA Europe

"We've been waiting 45 years to organize such a big basketball tournament in Poland," said Schetyna.

"I would like to wish FIBA Europe and the organisers great games and great emotions, and to (Poland) coach Katzurin, at least the same result we had in 1963 (silver medalists)."

"EuroBasket is the top European basketball competition," commented Vassilakopoulos.

"The best teams and players will be here next year so the tournament will be the focus of attention."

The 15 teams already qualified for EuroBasket 2009 and the one to be determined team to come from the Additional Qualifying Round were drawn into four groups of four:

The top three teams from each group will advance to the Qualifying Round.  Teams from Groups A and B will play their Qualifying Round games in Bydgoszcz while the six teams advancing from Groups C and D will play in Lodz.  The Quarter-finals, Semi-finals and Finals will be played in Katowice.

The final spot at EuroBasket 2009 will be earned by the winner of the Additional Qualifying Round.  The six teams participating were drawn into two groups of three with the winners of each group playing each other home and away for the final ticket to Poland.

Finally, the four teams competing in the Additional Relegation Round were assigned numbers to determine the order of their games.  The teams finishing in the bottom two spots will be relegated to Division B.
