The 2008-09 women's club competition season kicked off on Thursday with the draws for EuroCup Women and EuroLeague Women being held near Munich, Germany.
Representatives of all 24 clubs participating in EuroLeague Women as well as many EuroCup Women officials were on hand for the proceedings, as the draw was made for Europe's premier women's basketball competitions.
The EuroCup Women was up first and the growth of the tournament was evident from the number of teams involved.
"We have seen a tremendous increase in interest for EuroCup Women. We needed 48 teams but got 58 instead." Commented FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin before the draw began.
As usual EuroLeague Women will feature the best women's basketball talent in the world with teams like Bourges Basket, Gambrinus Brno, Ros Casares and Spartak Moscow Region taking part.
"As usual we expect EuroLeague Women to be extremely competitive. It has become the premier women's basketball club competition in the world and this season will be no exception." Said Zanolin.
The EuroLeague Women season will kick off on 15th October while EuroCup Women's schedule gets underway with Qualifying Round games on 2nd October.
