Lucky Losers KK Zagreb Into EuroChallenge Regular Season

12 November 2008

FIBA Europe has announced Wednesday that KK Zagreb, the best-ranked club over the last three seasons from the teams that did not progress from Qualifying Round II, will advance to the EuroChallenge Regular Season as a lucky loser.

The decision was taken by the FIBA Europe Competitions Commission in order to complete a roster of 32 clubs for the EuroChallenge Regular Season.

Capo d'Orlando (Italy), who were qualified directly to the Regular Season of the EuroCup dropped out at the beginning of the season and were replaced by Benetton Treviso, who were originally scheduled to play in Qualifying Round I.

Benetton Fribourg (Switzerland), the original opponent of Benetton Treviso in Qualifying Round I, were then given a bye to Qualifying Round II of the EuroCup but that meant that only seven clubs instead of eight, were qualified for the EuroChallenge from the Qualifying Round I of EuroCup.

As a consequence nine teams, instead of eight, had to progress from Qualifying Round II, in order to have 32 teams in the EuroChallenge group stage.

The FIBA Europe Competitions Commission decided to award that extra berth to the best ranked EuroChallenge club from the clubs that did not progress from Qualifying Round II.

The draw for the EuroChallenge Regular Season will take place this coming Saturday, 15th November, in Freising, Germany.
