A new attendance record has been broken for a basketball game in Belgium with 15,500 spectators turning out on Saturday night for a domestic league game between EuroChallenge clubs Antwerp Giants and Okapi Aalstar.

Antwerp achieved their goal of breaking the previous attendance record of 14,000, which they set last season.

The game was worthy of the attendance, with Antwerp clinging on to win by three points in overtime, 88-85, as Bryan Hopkins showed the good form seen earlier this season in the EuroChallenge, top-scoring with 34 points.

One of the 15,500 spectators was FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak, who enjoyed the spectacle.

"It is great for the sport of basketball in Belgium to be able to get a turnout like this, and even better that the fans were rewarded with such an exciting game," said Mr Novak following the game.

The Giants currently entertain fifth spot in the Belgian domestic league standings, one position and four points behind Okapi Aalstar.
